Sensing in Productions

Constructing immersive and adaptive media experiences requires a detailed understanding of captured media assets. A production studio with hundreds of sensors and devices, tracking the chef’s every move and measuring each ingredient.

This project required a scalable and highly reliable system to capture a wealth of information about a real production. In order to achieve this our team set about constructing a data capture system to store footage from the cameras and sensors in real-time. The system could analyse the data using machine learning, computer vision and AI in near real-time providing labelled output to professional editors at the BBC. We contracted the set in house making it portable and setup within 2-3 hours.

We developed bespoke 3D renders of the kitchen island before construction. This allowed us to design our portable kitchen, check scale and usable workspace for the chef before being on set.

We had an incredible array of sensing technologies within the set and kitchen island. RFID identified and located objects across the workbench, utensils sensors detected what was in use and what utensils were being used for and water flow meters measured amounts dispensed from the tap.
