To enhance patient health monitoring, Think Active Labs partnered with an NHS provider to develop and integrate a cutting-edge solution for continuous activity tracking. The result was ActiveCloud: & Sync Client, a wrist-worn accelerometer that provides real-time monitoring and syncing of patient activity data via Bluetooth. The wearable seamlessly connects with a partner mobile application, ensuring that healthcare professionals receive accurate, real-time insights into patient activity. The novel aspect of this provider’s approach to activity tracking was in the actions for patients. Patients typically were referred for this service when they had issues managing their energy expenditure. Typical deployments of activity trackers focus on increasing the users levels of activity. Instead the team were focussed on educating patients on their energy budget for a day and allowing them to manage their day more effectively. At the heart of this system is a custom Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) algorithm developed by Think Active Labs. This algorithm measures activity levels and estimates oxygen consumption, providing a more detailed understanding of patient movement and metabolic activity. The MET algorithm integrates with the client's existing patient data infrastructure, offering a holistic view of patient activity trends over time.

Design

Wearable Device Development and Sourcing: Think Active Labs assisted our client in developing custom firmware to capture wearable data and compute on-device activity analysis. We sourced suppliers for our client who were able to provide an off-the-shelf hardware solution that could be flashed with our own firmware and also able to scale to the demands of the client.

Think Active Cloud: Think Active Cloud offers a powerful cloud-based platform for healthcare providers to manage cohort deployments of wearable devices, analyse patient data in near real-time, and securely share insights across clinical teams. The cloud solution enables clinicians to inspect cohort data, monitor patient trends, and make informed health decisions based on real-time and historical data.




Think Active Sync App for Real-Time Data Syncing: The Think Active Sync mobile application ensures immediate transmission of activity data from the wearable to the healthcare provider via Bluetooth, providing up-to-date insights on patient health. The solution has been developed to easily be rebranded for new customers.

Custom Algorithm Development: We consulted research literature and worked closely with our client to develop a novel algorithm to assess patient activity levels using Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) that accurately tracks patient activity levels and CO2 expenditure. The algorithm offers healthcare professionals a more comprehensive view of patient activity and metabolic output whilst ensuring that the developed solution maintains data consistency with existing datasets collected with the client’s previous device.

Seamless Integration into existing infrastructure: The solution integrates with the client’s existing activity monitoring system, allowing for a unified view of patient health data across different platforms.

Long-Term Data Collection: The wearable technology is designed for durability and continuous use, supporting long-term health monitoring initiatives for patients.

Our partner NHS provider deployed our solution with over 1500 patients within the NHS providing critical data to clinicians to assist patients in managing their energy expenditure. The service has been running for 3 years collecting millions of data points and making a real difference in patient wellbeing.
